Ahhhh, a change of pace from the T5. Thank God, you may be thinking. I'm in a bit of a dilemma regarding an actual software question!!

I've done a number on the T3, as some of you are well aware. Big Brayder fan. I'm gettin' restless.

The following are on the block for deletion from ROM. This would be only my 2nd "treatment" after the original one months ago. I went ahead and did a ROM backup of "the net current picture." Here's a list of what I'm considering:

Dialer 55k
Expense 49k
Modem Support 53k
NotePad 94k
Phone Link 65k
Phone Support 102k
SMS 45k
SMS Support 35k
Splash Screen 91k

I thought about Bluetooth, and Brayder/Sprat was so kind as to alert me: "Caution, BLUETOOTH MUST STAY TO AFFORD VOICE RECORDER!!" That was nice of them! Otherwise that'd be another 432k. Rats. Gotta have the vox (although you can delete that too, and lop off another 138k! Wahoo!!).

Has anyone deleted these - any or all? I don't use the T3 for dialing, SMS or internet. I left them originally in case I decided to -- I'm most interested in whether or not any of you have deleted

Splash Screen
Notepad and/or
Expense (all seemingly worthless to me).

Often, deleting something "web related," although you don't USE that particular feature, can disable an app like FireViewer (which I don't use). I wanted input from you wonderful "Co - Spratter" folks before I eliminate AT LEAST the 3 mentioned immediately above. I'm tempted to take it all out and save 600k total. I've always found the splashscreen a waste of time but I don't want "killing it" to stop hacks from reloading, or some such other "procedural error." If it all goes well, I gain 589k of additional flash (bringing 10,000k to 10,600k) which would give me some "slack space." That is needed when you're pulling apps out of flash and into RAM to UPGRADE, then move back to flash. Eventually the flash automatically "compacts;" there's probably nothing wrong with that other than I don't like ROM data moved around unless necessary. The additional slack space gives some "breathing room" to avoid unnecessary compaction after repeated back and forth Flash moving of updated apps.

Many, many thanks in advance if you can give 2 cents - I'll tag this thread as "subscribed" and hold on to hear from a couple of you. I emailed Brayder before posting, but Brad's got a lot going on and can't always get right back to me. Thanks for any "input" you might have.

Paul,
I have deleted all of those except note pad, and only because I brought over a logo that I had designed on my old Sharp Zaurus. I probably will never use it again, but out of sentimentality I have kept it. I haven?t deleted Bluetooth, but only in the hopes of someday finding someone to beam notes or messages or something. No hitch so far, and that was many months ago. Richard

Just to clarify, ALL OF THOSE LISTED except NOTEPAD? Wow.

I was concerned over the "SMS thing" only because of Agendus; I know I obviously lose functionality, but didn't want Agendus to crash over "no SMS" if it "tried to dial something" and couldn't.

Also, if the screen splash thing is gone, what does it (T3) do at startup? Just skip and do the next thing? I'm wondering since I have YAHM with 2 hacks, and TEalMaster with TealLaunch, both of which have to "load" at startup. I guess they just go on their merry way since the splash screen comes first, right?

FANTASTIC. Thanks. If you see a big puff of smoke over California . . . . . just wave!!

Cheers.

I use Launcher X and power on goes straight to my first, or main page. Otherwise, I don?t use Agendus, so I cant help you there.
Richard

Everything went, based on your recommendation and (thank goodness) your experience with having done it yourself.

All Good!!

Agendus fine - no SPLASH SCREEN is just GREAT - loads up much faster, TealMaster and YAHM screens (yes, crazy PTL has TWO hack managers!) fly up. Zippee Doo-Dah, you're done!! Sprat it til it smokes!!!

Flash gave message "wanna expand?" - you betcha!!

The only "tricky thing" is getting rid of the left-behind a68 files, not all of which "want to come out" until a soft reset or two, even with the "merciless" TomCatalog. Saved/Unsaved prefs for the items you dumped also remain, but they're easy enough. Saved Prefs shot down in size - it's remarkable how on the first spratting months ago, how 2-3 PAGES of saved prefs were related to removed stuff (especially versamail/multi mail - something like 18 entries). The deletions above yielded another 12-15 entries "outta here." Man alive, I love lean and mean operation!! Now Saved/Unsaved Prefs is pretty much my installed software only - easier to "police" for errant entries.

It's just terrific - I love the added "room" but ESPECIALLY the faster loading without that stupid splashscreen - and I think all the extraneous junk files are cleaned out. Free remaining Flash of 2,520 went to 3,200k, which will add "comfort room" against overly frequent compaction. Total free Flash now is 10,560k! Thanks so much drbaer - these last "holdouts" were just bugging me.

(other than Teal Stuff!)

Why Seth, you handsome web guru, that would be . . . .

www.brayder.com.

You can just Sprat for $7.95 (or something like that). For around $30 you get a PACKAGE. Sprat (removing stuff from ROM including 4MB of extra languages, old ROM versions of Kinoma and Docs2Go, Real Player, "Welcome," Quicktour and in my case above the "SplashScreen")

JackFlash then "opens that up," and allows you to put apps (NOT DATABASES, hacks and some other questionable stuff - I'll email you a list) BACK IN FLASH. The current Docs2Go, current new version of Kinoma, and any other program (pretty much) that you like.

I freed up 10MB, and tonight another 560k. I've filled up 7MB of that, leaving 3MB still available. 48 applications in flash, all secured by JACKSAFE (which comes with JackFlash). It's the most important thing, since that's what PROTECTS you after a hard reset, and ALL your stuff comes back!

You can't store saved/unsaved preferences, or databases like contacts/calendar/to do, etc -- but programs like Agendus (950k!) no longer takes up a meg of RAM. It also returns after a hard reset along with everything else you put in there.

I'm giving you the speech because it's important not to just "free up nonsense," but then take advantage of that room and PROTECT those apps with JackSafe. Brayder are a wonderful company and had a "problem" a few months back with Sprat 3.0Beta3. This was due to a BUG IN THE FLASH CHIP OF THE T3, and some people (including me) ended up "reflashing" the ROM. Nightmare. The day 3.0beta FOUR came out, I downloaded and TRIED AGAIN. I won't be told what I can and can't have in ROM, and P1 should have given us the option of putting those OUTDATED VERSIONS on the Install CD so we could choose.

I'm a big "flash" guy and the "little stuff" listed above was on my mind but I wasn't sure - until drbaer said HE HAD DONE IT. Now I'm flying high.

I was overly aggressive and also got rid of VersaMail (1.5MB), Photos, Calculator (I have 2 others) and the stuff I listed above in this post. 10MB is serious stuff, and I've tested it with 2 hard resets.

"Sprat/Flashing," as I call it, is the only way to go -- get a T3 and SpratFlash it. By doing that, and with what's coming soon on the software front, believe me -- you won't miss a T5. The reason I'm "cleaning up the ROM" is that I want to get ANOTHER SPARE T3 next week, and a "snapshot ROM" of an emptied T3 is what I'll want.

Very important: JackSprat gives you the option of backing up your ROM to the SD Card (my choice) or the desktop. Backing up to the Desktop requires a separate User ID and I thought it was messy. The SD Card files should be copied, however -- to the desktop -- and A CD BURNED!! That way you're protected before "proceeding."

Some apps NOT TO PUT IN FLASH:

ClipPro
TealMaster
TealLaunch
TealTools
TealLock
SplashPhoto
MakeSpot (part of AGendus). These will cause you grief. They're the only "exception list" I've been able to put together.

I'll email you Seth with any information you need. Sorry to be wordy, but this is not something to take lightly - it's "Palm OS freedom," but it's also the freedom to really mess up!! Go slowly, and be careful. BE SURE AND DO THE BACKUP TO THE SD CARD.

Cheers

when i go to bayders website it doesn't seem as though it will work on my TT3 or atleast the version that they are advertising. Could you zap me a link to these apps for the TT3's os 5

thanks buddy!

-Seth

By "TT3" you mean Tungsten T3, right? Ok. Dandy!

JackSprat 3.0 beta 5.
JackFlash beta 3.0 beta 14. Comes with JackSafe.

They work on the T3. Believe Me!

Go to the site and click on "News." They're right there!
Direct Link:
http://www.brayder.com/news.html

Indeed, fine AND dandy. Go get 'em, Seth!!

I'M SO MAD. I BOUGHT THE JACKSPRAT/FLASH BUNDLE AND IT WON'T WORK ON MY T3. I WANT MY MONEY BACK OR I WANT THE RIGHT PRODUCT  WHAT DID I DO WRONG. THE SITE IS SO CONFUSING:confused:

Cyclinghermes- I think you proceed like this:
buy the product from the website, then
you are authorized to download the latest (e.g., 3.05) beta which is what will work on the T3. Good luck.

I tried to re-download Sprat 3.0b5 yesterday (to have "virgin" copy) and it was trying to tell me that my old email registration address didn't match their records (even though I updated with the new one).

Support over there is very good about resolving their site "shortcomings" -- they do take extraordinary precautions to prevent product theft and pirating.

the exact quote on the FIRST page of the website is:
----------------------------------
"JackFlash? 3.0
JackFlash is the fastest way to expand your Palm organizer. Use the extra Flash Memory in your device to expand the memory capabilities easily.

JackFlash works by giving you access to the extra Flash ROM space available on most Palm devices. If you have a Palm Tungsten C, Tungsten T, Tungsten T2, Tungsten T3 (coming soon), Tungsten W, m500, m505, m515, i705, III, IIIc, IIIx, IIIxe, V, Vx, Treo 90, 180, 180g, 270, 300, Kyocera 6035, 7135, Acer s10, or a Sony Clie (except most SL10, SJ20, SJ22, SJ30) then JackFlash is for you!

JackFlash OS 5 support is available now in beta. JackSprat OS 5 support is coming."
--------------------------------------
That's where you click "NEWS" as I instructed you, on left side, and it goes straight to the 3.0b5/3.0b14 versions THAT WILL, AND HAVE WORKED, on the T3 for quite a few months. Okay???

One trick: if your email is [email protected], you enter that email and your hotsync name in a box. You've done this, I'm sure. Then you get an email giving you an APPROVAL CODE to download the software. This software will also need an ACTIVATION CODE; in other words - there are two codes. THE IMPORTANT THING IS: when you enter the email address, replace the "@" sign with "_" or it won't take. In other words,

cowsnot_etc.com, password: frogrump. You're then whisked off to a download page for the correct beta (3.0b5, 3.0b14) and away you go. The password to ACTIVATE is sent separately.

The site is confusing but [email protected] is VERY GOOD - got back to me at 8:30 Pacific Time last night! Once you have them (approval/activation codes) -- believe me you'll have the right product. If I gave you the link to the direct download page (if EVEN I COULD FIND IT!) It wouldn't let you in without the password - which should have been emailed after your purchase.

ANOTHER THING: The site is downloaded every 24 hours. It may be that your purchase isn't "recognized" by the system yet, but will be later today. Sometimes the response you get FIRST gives the impression even THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND their site functions properly - my email said "we're passing it on to second level support;" by that time I'd figured out that my OLD email address was popping up in the box automatically (scary enough), and that I had to enter the NEW one, and WITH THE UNDERLINE. That's what I wasn't doing, and it kept just "looping" the box back up with the old address.

I was frustrated too. However:

JackSprat has been "working" on the T3 since 3.0b3, almost a year ago. There have been countless posts/threads on here going back a year for the T3. They've been working out bugs since as a result of a bad flash chip in the T3. If you're this mad this early, maybe you should just get a refund; no one else here seems to be screaming about it. You're a webpage designer. They should pay YOU to fix the thing!!

It is almost "alienating" to PAID, REGISTERED users. I don't think cheesy software crooks would be smart enough to use the thing anyway!! Give us legit people a break.

One last warning: if you think this is fun, I'd hate to hear a tirade after you delete the wrong thing. JS/JF isn't for the faint of heart or impatient. You'll notice I posted a question, and I've been using it for quite some time. When in doubt - wait. Also, DO NOT PROCEED without a ROM backup.

Sorry for your trouble - yes, Brayder's site is to the say least "challenging," Seth - but no one there is trying to rip you off, I promise.

@Paul & Hermes,

Check out TankerBob's Palm web page on his site Tankerbob.com - he has an excellent article on using the Jacks.

He knows what he is talking about & his site is quite helpful.

How to get rid of those pesky a68 files?

Try Cleanup, half of the neatfreak package. There is a menu option to try to get rid of these. I say try because not all will be deleted. But not to worry, I have another approach. I use BBVFS 2.something & from the backup screen, if you choose 'select none' fm the menu & then hilite that a68 & choose delete fm the menu - this usually works for me.

Paul, any word on what you told me in PM?

Eli

I have never visited TankerBob's page before 20 minutes ago.

TankerBob had some good points, especially about the JackSafe 3.0b11 lockup - that happened to me. After discussing it with Brayder I'm not so sure it's JACKSAFE that did it, or the auto-reset responding to the bad flash chip on the T3. The fix in 3.0b12-14 was flash related, but not the restore qualitiies and/or functions of jackSafe. Anyway, at least the warning is there for new users.

The 'DON'T DELETE BLUETHOOTH" point was important too . . . I left mine alone because the VOICE RECORDER won't work without out . . . he also mention hotsync problems.

One curious thing . . . he talks about Sony. . . .

JackSprat/Flash doesn't SUPPORT Sony, at least not now.

Other than that it sounds like the posting I did here some months back, but his is "dated August 2002" - long before the T3. Hmm. Maybe great minds think alike. And maybe Sony was supported at that time (?).
