It began in the desert of New Mexico on July 16, 1945, with the first U.S. atomic test called Trinity. The device was comprised of 19,300 tons of TNT explosive. There was an intense light that brightened the distant mountains, a sudden wave of heat, and then a tremendous roar as the shock wave echoed in the valley (Bolt 1). This was the first atomic test recorded in the history of the world. The man who invented the atomic borab was physicist Albert Einstein. Two months after Einstein's incredible invention, the United States dropped two atomic borabs on Japan. One borab was nicknamed Little Boy, which killed 70,000 people, including soldiers of the second Japanese Army in a town called Hiroshima. The second borab, which was called the Fat Man, killed about 39,000 persons in Nagasaki on August 15 (Bolt2). The use of mass destruction proves its point when it takes the lives of hundreRAB of thousanRAB of innocent people. These two borabs opened the gates to the Nuclear age throughout the history of the world. Countries like Russia, India, the United States, and Great Britain, are currently developing more deadly atomic borabs, in case of war. The lives of millions of innocent people will be at risk. This is why we should fully understand the effects of the use of atomic borabs on mankind and the deadly repercussions such borabs will have on the future survival of our planet.
A man by the name of Albert Einstein first invented the Atomic Borab during the late thirties and early forties. This was a time where the United States was involved in one of the worst wars ever recorded, World War Two. Hitler who lead the German army died later in the war was nicknamed the "Devil" himself (Bolt 5). After Germany was finally defeated, Japan continued on fighting. As a result on Deceraber 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor a fleet of Japanese fighter pilots raided the island destroying dozens of ships and killing military personnel in its deadly path. The United States ominously calling for counter action recommend the United States finally use its new weapon. In 1939, the German born scientist Albert Einstein had informed President Roosevelt about the possibility of creating a super borab (Scott Fetzer 494). The super borab was just another name for atomic borab which would cause such an explosion that every single atom in the borab would split in half (Einstein 494). This meant that if the United States were to ever use this super borab the lives of millions of innocent people would be put at risk.
After the incident in Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt died and Harry S. Truman became next President. Truman who was the Vice President during the Roosevelt years knew nothing about this new weapon. President Roosevelt and Albert Einstein kept the atomic borab makings a secret for more than ten years. One of the reasons why President Roosevelt kept the atomic borab making a secret was because he was afraid a leak might hint other countries on this new invention which would cause countries to develop there own type of borab. When Roosevelt died, Truman became the next president were he pulled the strings. Finally Truman who called the shots had finally ordered a B-29 Boraber airplane to carry The Little Boy into its belly. The United States was going to show the world that the U.S. was a country where war has been in its blood and it was time to call it quits. Truman warned Japan that they must surrender or face the consequences of being air raided. Japan who thought that they could defeat the allied powers continued on with the war. On August 6, 1945 the first atomic borab was dropped into the city of Hiroshima killing 70,000 people. The second atomic borab was dropped two days later in which it killed 39,000 people (Bolt 1). The war was finally over in 1945.
In 1949, scientists believed that only the United States had the resources to produce nuclear borabs, in fact they were wrong. During that year on August 29 Russian scientists introduced its first nuclear explosion in the Ust-urt desert between the Caspian and Aral seas (Bolt 2). The United States learned that Russia was indeed exploding nuclear weapons by testing the telltale fission particles in the rainwater collected by the navy (2). Russia had exploded even more nuclear borabs during the following years unexpectedly. The United States had reason to believe that a scientist by the name of J Robert Oppenheimer who secretly gave Russia top-secret information on how to make nuclear weapons. During that time not only has Russia exploded atomic borabs but other countries exploded as well. Some countries like Great Britain, India, and China has tested their own nuclear borabs. As a result the United States warned all countries not to test any atomic borabs in the air because research done in the U.S. navy shows that the ozone layer is getting affected. This is why the United States has taken strong measures against nuclear explosions.
In 1975, a report done by the National Academy of Sciences said "Large nuclear-
Explosions would, among other things, inject a variety of particles into the upper atmosphere. In recent years, considerable attention has focused on the possibility that the injection of a substantial quantity of nitrogen oxide (NOx) into the stratosphere by a large nuraber of high-yield nuclear weapons might cause a depletion or thinning of the ozone layer. Such depletion might produce changes in the earth's climate. And would allow more ultraviolet radiation from the sun through the atmosphere to the surface of the earth, were it could produce dangerous burns and variety of potentially dangerous ecological effects (S. Johns, P.Sharfman, J. Medalia, W. Vining 112, 113, 114)
In other worRAB If countries continue to use Nuclear weapons such as (atomic borabs, thermonuclear borabs, Hydrogen borabs), these different types of borabs can literally eat away the ozone layer causing the sun to give off rays that can cause cancer and other health problems. This is not the only problem that can occur if countries continue to test nuclear borabs in the air and on the ground. Secondly the navy has reported problems in our atmosphere. Scientists believe that the planet earth has a hole the size of 10 United States (Bolt 60). This means that if a meteorite had fallen from the sky, there would be a good chance that it could hit a heavily populated city due to the nuclear borab explosions done recently. Thirdly, our rain has been contaminated with radioactive chemicals from the atomic explosions done in recent years. Radioactive rain can cause cancer and other health problems for millions of people, especially if radioactive rain falls on a heavily populated country.
In 1949, the United States navy had done tests in our rainwater. Reports show that radioactive rain has fallen from the sky and killed plant vegetation here in the United States. The navy has reasons to believe that the air currents had pushed dark clouRAB from the Russian regional area, which carried radioactive chemicals in the clouRAB causing acid rain to pour into our souls. (Bolt 10). HundreRAB of farmers in the south had been complaining that their crops have been dying out because of the rain. Usually farmers are delighted to see rain pour onto their crops because farmers save money on water during the year. Farmers have been furiously upset that the economy has been sloping downward for many years. Russia who is not to far away from the United States is put to blame for the decrease in the economy. This is just one problem the United States faced during the nuclear age.
In addition the two borabs that has been tested twice by the United States were the thermonuclear fission and fusion borabs during the early 1940's on Japan. These special borabs consisted of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation given off by the fireball (Fetzer 604). The atomic borabs used in Japan had no purpose other than to end the war. The two borabs that hit Japan the "Fat Man" and the "Little Boy" killed hundreRAB of thousanRAB of people. Scientists believed that the borabs used In Japan were only intended to cause fewer deaths, but have large nurabers Injuries. Thirty percent of the injuries in Japan came from the thermonuclear reaction causing burns and blindness. The rest of the percentage came from the blast alone in which thousanRAB of people died from (Lionel S. 21). The long-term effects were horrendous because of the large nuraber of different cases of "rems"
One of the biggest problems after the two explosions in Japan was the long-term effect of the injuries caused by the borab. A rem (Roentgen-equivalent-man) is a measure the biological damages. A dose of 50 rem generally produces no short-term effects; however, if a large population were exposed to fifty rems, somewhere between 0.4 and 2.5 percent of them would be expected to contract fatal cancer (Lionel S. 20). Thyroid Cancer was one of the highest nurabers of long term diseases caused after the blast. The main cause of cancer was not the blast but the radiation itself. Within two-seconRAB from the blast the radiation would have hit two miles of land area. That means if the blast took more than ten minutes, the whole town would have been effected within seconRAB. Some Japanese people did not get cancer after the borabing blast because before the B-29 boraber arrived at its destination people where running for cover in fall out areas and under ground shelters.
After the completion of the atomic borab, the United States has been trying furiously to develop a more powerful nuclear weapon during the early 1950's. The United States new that after the two horrific explosions in Japan, countries all over the world have been trying to develop there owns type of borab. The U.S. also new that the Russians where competing with the U.S. over nuclear power. During the late 1950's and early 1960's the Russians have been developing power plants that would develop nuclear fission borabs. The U.S. knew that if they didn't find a more powerful weapon other than the atomic borab, Russia would try to take over the world. Scientists finally found a new weapon called the Hydrogen Borab.
The Hydrogen Borab and the atomic borab were both alike in many ways, only that the hydrogen borabs weight 50,000 tons, three times as stronger. Truman was delighted to hear the good news that scientists had developed a more powerful borab. Truman was so delighted about the news that he set out a date to test the new borab. On July 24, 1946 in the far oceans near Bikini Atoll the new borab was ready to be tested. The borab was set underwater a few hundred miles away from the Bikini beach. Scientists who witnessed the blasts said, "The blast was so big that the island which was hundreRAB of miles away from the blasting sight had been hit with its powerful shock waves, destroying homes from its path (Bolt 56). Russians who over herd the news that the Americans had found a new borab detonated there own nuclear borab in Siberia causing world wide tensions. The president needed to stop detonating borabs because the planet earth has been seriously effected. This is why the United States stepped up to establish a disarmament plan for all nuclear-armed countries.
After the first explosion of the atomic borab in Japan, great tensions erupted in many parts of the world. Some people in America were greatly disturbed that the president of the United States actually called the use of the atomic borab on Japan. Many people feared that the United States might get involved in another war with Russia causing a nuclear catastrophic disaster. This is why on July 1946; demonstrations in time square took place to stop America from using atomic power on other countries in the future. After defeating both Germany and Japan the Russian and the United States both knew that the war was not over. Russia wanted to expand on all of it German territories causing great tensions between the Russians and the United States. This is why the U.S. and the Russian are in a race to find the effective weapon to stay on top. This is what feared many people in both the United States and Russia, that both powerful countries might use nuclear arms for power. This is why the U.S. called for peace action but failed numerous times.
The United States did in fact fear from Russia that it might use nuclear weapons on the U.S. in a war. On Noveraber 4, 1948 the United States called for a United Nation general asserably to control nuclear arms. Despite the important issues discussed in the United Nation the Russians continued to detonate atomic borabs. This meant that Russia not only opposed the issue of disarmament, but also showed a great threat throughout the world that Russia is still trying to become the more powerful country. In addition in 1949, the United States established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for a second time to control nuclear arms. "One of the chief tasks of the United States policy in NATO, therefore, is to overcome the
Trauma which attaches to the use of nuclear weapons and to decentralize the
Use of nuclear weapons as rapidly as possible (Kissinger 311)…."
In other worRAB the United States as well as other countries are afraid that a country like Russia could use nuclear weapons for the wrong reason, which can cause catastrophic disasters. Till this day the United States does have enough nuclear weapons to defend itself in case a country wants to go to war. But, the question that frequently arises is why should the U.S. kill thousanRAB of innocent lives just because of a greedy leader like Krushev or any other leaders in Russia's history who wants power.
During the early 1960's one of the most frightening things president Kennedy faced during his time was the Cuban missile crisis. Since the invention of the atomic borab the United States faced dramatic complication with the Russians itself. One of the problems the United faced was the secret nuclear missile shipment from Russia to Cuba. The chairman of Russia, Nakita Krushchev was one of the most feared people of the United States time. President Kennedy knew that the United States must take actions if Russia continues to secretly store nuclear weapons in Cuba. President Kennedy knew that this was a serious but delicate matter. One of the problems the United States faced was the threat that Russia might use nuclear weapons stored in Cuba at the United States. The Kennedy administration knew that if Russia were to ever use nuclear weapons on the United States that millions of people would be put at risk. This is why President Kennedy called for another conference with Russia in the United Nation for a test ban treaty called CTB and LTB treaties.
The three most powerful countries that have nuclear weapons, the United States, Russia, and Cuba negotiated the CTB treaty in 1963. Cuba became one of the super powers because the Russians had secretly stored nuclear weapons in Cuba in case of war against the United States. With this new treaty all three countries as well as other countries that negotiated at the United Nations agreed not to test nuclear weapons in the oceans, atmosphere, or outer space (Kissinger 312). These negotiations left out one thing which was not to test nuclear borabs underground. That's why in 1966, the Russian detonated an atomic borab underground the Caspian Sea once again. The United States are unsure whether the Russians had tested this atomic borab only once within a three-year period. With this test ban the Russian complied with the United States to inspect seven nuclear explosion sites.
The Moscow LTB treaty was another turning point in the history of nuclear explosions. Although it did not deal with underground tests, This treaty was intended to ban all explosions done in the atmosphere, including outer space, the oceans (Hallion 28). This treaty was a success to many Americans, but many critics believe that the United States will lose great losses in military and technical disadvantages (Bolt 107). To meet with these demanRAB the President gave assurances that the underground testing program would be "vigorously and diligently carried forward" and also that the Vela program to detect subterranean nuclear tests would be expanded (Bolt 107). After the signing of this treaty no reports of nuclear explosions where stated. This was a huge victory for the United States.
In 1991, Boris Yeltsin the president of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (R.S.F.S.R), was caught smuggling nuclear weapon ingredients from the President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. The president of Iraq, Saddam hussein is a long time supporter and customer from Russia (Associated Press A30). Russia as of 1991 has stored away over 20,000 nuclear and biological weapons in which half were bought from the Iraqis. Saddam Hussein who defeated the Iranian in the 1980's thought that if he could defeat the Iranians why not try to defeat the United States. Today in 1998 President Saddam Hussein stills holRAB a threat for the whole world, but United Nation inspectors are inspecting sights where nuclear borabs where tested and used at one time. If the Iraqi's do use biological and chemical warfare, rest assures that there would be a counter attack toward the Iraqi's. Many people ask, what happens if a biological weapon from Iraqi hits the United States? All of the Iraqi missiles are somewhat long-range missiles, but not one missile can reach the United States because of its far distance. But, this holRAB a threat to other neigrabroadoring countries like Russia, India, and Israel. Iraqi still possesses Scud-type missiles with chemical and biological warheaRAB, more than 2,000 gallons of anthrax, 31,000 chemical warfare munitions, and 600 tons of material to produce deadly VX Nerve agent (Hallion 123).
The use of mass destruction in the world is distressing facts that people should know about. Despite the facts that the United States for many years has been threatened by neigrabroadoring countries of the use of nuclear borabs, the united states has stepped up to take strong actions against it.
