At what point is a bike too expensive to take to school?

I paid 800 dollars for my bike and I was psyched about riding it too school but now I don't know if the risk of getting it stolen is worth it. If you ride your nice bike to public places how do you lock it? Any tips on how I should go about this?
I'm a college student
 
Where I live, the main concern is the danger of traffic accident during peak hours, like going to school

I cycle my valueless classic award-winning road bike as and when I like, even to neighbouring country

Perhaps you are better off not cycling to school, especially if it is within walking distance
