At what point in US History did patriotism become the exclusive property of war...

...mongers and political zealots? Until the Vietnam war something called a "loyal opposition" was allowed and acknowledged. Then along came "America - Love it or Leave it!" implying, support the Vietnam War or you aren't welcome in the US, aren't a loyal citizen.

By the time talk radio came along the daily diatribes spent thousands of words every day implying disagreement with NEOCON fanatics was unpatriotic and disloyal to the US. The definition of patriotism narrowed down somewhere during that time to be ideological, as opposed to a birthright and love of country. Something found only among zealots and political fanatics.

Did this happen before Vietnam and I just didn't notice, or did Vietnam bring it?
