My husband and I were talking the other day about strangers and how we haven’t really talked to our son about them. He’s 3 yrs old and we feel that it’s time to have that conversation. Mainly because we visit playgrounds all the time, our yard is fenced in but on a public trail where many people are always walking, working out, running, etc. So we have to make sure he understands what a stranger is so we can try and prevent any issues in the future.
We asked him if someone he doesn’t know walks up to him and says “Hey little boy, I have an awesome toy truck over here in my car, want to come see?” What he’d say…he told us he LOVES toys and he wants to see it.
So again, he’s 3 yrs old, and knowing his response, we need to work on this.
But how do you talk about it and have it be in his language? I feel like we’re overloading him with information and he stopped listening 5 minutes ago.
At what age did you teach your kids about strangers? And how do you make it age appropriate? Do you know of any good children’s books that explain this type of thing?
I also plan on talking to his daycare to ask if this is something they talk about at school. I know they have firefighters visit the school often to talk about fire safety. I’d have to wonder if they have policemen come in also and talk about safety. So I plan on asking them about that too.
Thanks!
Obviously I wouldn’t leave him with strangers. I’m talking about how we’re at a public park/playground and tons of kids are around. I’m always watching my son, but that’s not to say that someone can’t approach him and try and persuade him to walk away. I definitely won’t be waiting until he’s in kindergarten. That’s 2 yrs from now.
