at&t palm pre- music from comp to phone?

I bought the palm pre from AT&T and I'm having trouble getting music on my phone. I connected it to the computer w. The usb chord and moved a playlist into the window that popped up for the device, but when I open my music on my phone it isn't there. The only app I've seen costs like $40 to put it on the computer and I ant afford that... Help?
