AT&T Blackberry Bold 9000 Battery?

Yesterday I was on the phone for a good hour an a half, when all of the sudden my phone shut off and would not turn back on. Upon further inspection I found that the battery had expanded thickness wise a good bit. Since the phone wouldn't turn back on with the battery in i decided to plug the phone in without it to see if it would turn on. The orange charging light comes on but the phone will not :( So I was wondering, should the phone come on without a battery? I know that most phones do but I never tried plugging the phone in before without the battery and I didn't know if blackberry's could. So can someone please let me know if my phone is f***ed. Thank you in advance.
 
Don't use that battery again because it will damage the phone.
If you go to a store, pretend like you're going to buy a battery so that you can put a new battery in your phone and see if it turns on. If it works, then buy the battery. and discard the old one. I dont think there is damage to the phone.
