AT&T Android back flip not an open device?

The Back flip was released on the AT&T network on Sunday and it is the first Android device to not allow applications to be installed from unknown sources. This is an outrage to lovers of the open customizable nature of the Android operating system.

So users of the Back Flip will only be able to install applications from the marketplace.

My question is; Will this matter at all to the average user? Isn't the marketplace flooded with applications? Are there programs that are in demand that do not exist in the marketplace? Other than restricting tethering is this in anyway more than a tiny issue?
