BAGHDAD, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were killed and 26 wounded in a series of bomb and gunfire attacks in Iraq on Sunday, the police said.
Four car bombs were detonated in separate locations in Taji area, some 20 km north of Baghdad, killing six people and wounding eight others, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
In Baghdad, gunmen shot dead an Interior Ministry employee in the southern Amil district and separately blew up a car bomb in the district, wounding four people, the source said.
Also in the capital, gunmen using silenced weapons wounded a police officer who was driving in the western Mansour district, the source added.
In a separate attack, a suicide car bomber struck a police checkpoint in the city of Kut, some 160 km southeast of Baghdad, killing five policemen, and wounding six others, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.
Two police officers were among the deaths, the source said.
In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a car bomb was detonated at a marketplace in the town of Khan Bani Saad, some 30 km east of Baghdad, killing one people and wounding five others, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
A police explosive expert was killed in the morning while he was trying to defuse a car bomb in the city of Sulaimn Pek, some 160 km north of Baghdad, a local police source said.
Separately, two roadside bombs struck a police patrol in Tarmiyah area,some 30 km north of Baghdad, wounding a policeman and a passerby, a local police source told Xinhua.
Violence and sporadic high profile attacks are still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the past few years.
