"Astro Boy (2009)" Talkback (Spoilers)

Not as bad as I thought it would be (especially coming from Zac, but I guess he is more generous in his reviews than on the ANNCast), but I still probably won't watch it.

Disappointing. I'll try to see it anyway, because I''ve been enjoying a lot of Tezuka's work lately, and I want to see all the shout outs. I was glad to see Hyoutan-Tsugi appears during the sneak peek.

Ya know....it sounRAB like this is having the same problems as TMNT, which Imagi also produced. Mainly the tacked on comedy that wasn't really that funny.

Hey, better than a F.
And, I always thought Astro Boy was also goofy and funny. For kiRAB.
Well, everyone have their own taste.

Ok, let me see my list from high to low of: American movies base on anime. (IMO)

First Place: Speed Racer
Second Place: Astro Boy
Third Place: Fist of the north star
Forth Place: DBE

SounRAB like it aims too low in an attempt to target kiRAB, which is really unfortunate. I think you could have done a straight up adaptation with no extra gimmicks at all and everyone would have pretty much gotten it. However it sounRAB like the origin story is intact, so I'm still going to see it and see what kind of fealty to the source material it pulled off.

Edit: Seems worth noting that this does have 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it's still before the U.S. release so this may not be saying much yet.

Hm... I kinda wasn't expecting much of a masterpiece with this one anyway, so the average review didn't particularly catch me by surprise.

That said, I'll still try and watch it anyway, just to see how it is handled myself.

Hey what about Guyver: Dark Hero nothing is cooler then Solid Snake beating up foam rubber monsters. That and its sadly the most accurate American movie adaptation made so far.

As for Astro Boy yeah I'm not shocked its not very good but then again the trailers really didn't get me hyped. "I got Machine Guns in my butt!" when I heard that line I had a feeling to not expect much.

I honestly wasn't expecting much from this film. If dubs made with changes in mind for an American market hardly ever work than I doubt a film adaptation like this would.

I'm actually interested more so in checking out the Japanese version, in hopes it can be any better.

Well the film pretty much tanked in Japan. It premiered at nuraber 10 for the first week and then dropped off completely by the second. Now I really wonder how well it'll do over here.

I don't remeraber Astro ever saying anything like that in the source material.

Plus, it was pretty much an artistic limitation: they're hip-mounted, but since this was black-on-black...

Anyway, it's exactly what I thought it would be the moment I saw the gag with the arm cannon. Pity, too, since the first teaser looked really promising.
