Earth's surface can be divided into the tropic zone near the equator the temperate zones and the arctic zones near the north and south poles. in which zone or zones is it possible for the sun to be directly overhead? in which zone or zones is it possible to have 24 hours of continuous darkness, during which time the sun is never above the horizon?

Near the equator, the sun can be directly overhead.

Due to the tilt of the Earth, the poles can be in the path of sunlight. During the summer (northern hemisphere), the north pole is in 24hr sunlight and the south pole is in 24hr darkness. This reverses when winter comes around.

Hi. Directly over head? The equatorial zone. Never above the horizon? The poles at certain points in the Earth's orbit.

The equator is when the sun is directly overhead. The poles are when there is either 24 hours of darkness or 24 hours of light (this is only when it is either summer or winter).
