I am a 40 y/o who when I get sick never gets a chest cold...always stays in my throat or mostly in my sinuses. A few weeks ago I had a nasty 7 day virus in which I had a VERY sore throat and low grade fever. Went to the Dr and lungs were clear. About 10 days later I was taking a deep breath to clear my throat and at the very end of the inspiration it sounded as though my throat was wheezing...it seems to clear if I cough. I have no shortness of breath on exertion or sitting. Went to Dr last week and she said I was barely wheezing and prescribed Xopenex MDI (the day before my husband listened to my chest and said one of my lobes was wheezing.) This "throat wheezing" seemed to stop so I didn't take the Xopenex (I'm also a bit scared to take an inhaler since I have never had one before and I know the side effects) Today however I have noticed that it has started again. Could this be the start of adult asthma (none in my family)? I think I may start it tonight but I want to wait until my husband comes home. Also does the chest tightness feel like a squeezing?

It could be actual asthma, it could just be a lingering side effect from your illness. It might improve over time.

If it's the first time you are using the inhaler, read the directions carefully. Even if they say the proper dosage is 2 inhalations, you might want to try just 1 to start with.

Most people don't have side effects other than feeling a little "wired."

I second Jane's post. It could be adult onset asthma or it could just be the effect of the infection you had.

If your doctor feels you need the inhaler, try it if you need it. At this stage, you are looking at treatment for your condition as it is. That does not necessarily mean you will need it long-term.
