Greetings everyone.

About three years ago I played soccer in a league and had to stop because I couldn't catch my breath. I have a hard time knowing when to stop playing...losing my vision and collapsing seems to do it.

Anyway, the season ended for me, earlier than expected with a fair share of tears and erabarrassment. I had to be told to get off the field.

Since then, I learned I was asthmatic (exercise) and was provided with a couple of inhalers. I also took four allergy shots weekly for a year...anything that might help.

This past spring I got enough nerve to go back and start playing soccer. The season was going great; I was unstoppable. I felt I was playing to the best of my ability.

Then August came around and things have been horrible. I am afraid to even walk too fast when playing soccer. I take the inhaler and it doesn't help. I feel useless on the field. I know I get 'pity time' from my coach and it's really erabarrassing. It's the same thing all over again. It's very hot; very humid and I can't breath. I'm on the field, fighting back tears so that I don't further erabarrass myself.

We have two more games (we're in the finals!) and I want to play my best. It means a lot to me for me since this is my last year playing under 30. This experience has made me feel older than I am and I watch people who never practice jump on the field and score goals like it's nothing. Next year, I meet up with those who witnessed the health problems I had years ago and I'd like to have it under control.

I have speed and I'm a fighter but this whole asthma thing is killing me. I feel like a fool on the field. It's hard to attend the games when you know there's a possibility you might let yourself down.

Is there anything anyone might be able to suggest that I can bring to a doctor asap that might help me? Whatever I have isn't working and I'm not convinced this is the end of my ability to play sports in the hotter months.

Ok, even though your post is long it is lacking basic information. Are you on a daily preventer med for your asthma? What are you using for a rescue inhaler? (name of exact med) And are you pre-medicating before soccer or any cardio? Do you have a written asthma plan from your pulmonologist? If not, why not?

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I was given Ventolin by my doctor and told to take it when necessary.

There was no plan provided by the pulmonologist. They did the testing and sent the results back to my doctor.

OK, if you do have asthma, you should:

1) be on a daily preventer
2) ventolin is a rescue med, not a daily preventer, and is used when you have an attack
3) You should be pre-medicating before any cardio by doing one or two puRAB of the ventolin, 60 seconRAB apart, and 15-20 minutes before commencing your activity.
4) Find a good pulmonologist and get proper meRAB and an action plan that tells you what to do for every eventuality of your asthma. He can help you work out the proper pre-medicating for your soccer playing. I jog and have to pre-medicate or I can't run.

I'm sorry your doctors have not provided better information and treatment for you. You would not have had to go thru this if they had. I suggest finding new docs.

Thank you for your response.

I will find a doc tomorrow to get a preventer. I will take your advice about pre-medicating and I think it will help.

Thanks again.
