assignments that discuss religion?

I am a college student in sc. The teacher had us read a short selection on buddhism. We were to write a post (online course) stating what the 4 noble truths are, and then if we agree with them. It turned into a debate.
Are teachers supposed to include religion in schools in this manner?

Buddhism is not a religion. It is an ancient Eastern philosophy. It should be part of social science or philsosophy.

for educational purposes, yes it is fine. But they cannot preach a religion or support one in the school.
