ASP.Net project types?

Hi all. I'm a newcomer to ASP.NET, though I've been using classic VB6 for around 5 years and have been using JavaScript and PHP for roughly 2 years also. I cant seem to gather just by looking at the project interfaces what the difference is between the following:

-An ASP.NET web site
-An ASP.NET web application
-An ASP.NET web service application

If someone could clarify the difference between these 3 project types, that would be much appreciated. Cheers
