asp.net; how can i check if the username or data is already existing in the database?

i want to trap username already taken, do i need to use customvalidator in visual studio/visual web developer to do that?, if yes, then how?..,or if you have any other suggestions. pls let me know....thanks need it now...
btw, im using c# and not VB as my language and mysql as database...
