As a member of the band for a solo artist, would you be involved in all their live gigs?

Say for example, I was a famous solo artist and I had a band who played the drums, electric guitar and piano. If I were to sing one song live on say Live Lounge, would my band have to be there playing their instruments? Or would they just be involved in the studio and when touring?

I'm a big fan of Kelly Clarkson and was watching some of her live shows on youtube, I've never seen her band playing in the background
