So. I have two packets of Sweet-n-Low in my coffee every morning because it is calorie free and delicious. I've heard that artificial sweeteners are "dangerous" and should be consumed in moderation... whatever 'moderation' is.

I've heard Stevia is better for you, but I tried it and in my opinion; it's barf.

Anywho... is my ritual unhealthy? Should I stop and just use sugar? I've been using this in my coffee for probably a year now.

Mehh..?

I think it is a bit overrated. Aspartame is said to be the most dangerous, but I think it is more of a myth, although I am not an expert. Millions of people are chewing Orbit gums every day, that have this ingredient, and I didn't notice they had any strange symptoms, brain cancer, etc......

Natural sweeteners (sugar) aren't very healthy either if we look that way.

yes, but we can read labels and not buy ones that have all the crap in them.

We as consumers have choices.

The reason they put the artificial sweeteners in is because it's cheaper and addicting.

I am very sensitive to aspartame. Any products with this in it will make my body react as if it is in low blood sugar mode. Splenda is real sugar but it is distilled with chlorine to which I am also sensitive. So I just stay away from them all. I have switched to turbinado sugar, also called Sugar in the Raw, for my tea and coffee. It is real sugar which has not been refined to white sugar. It also is zero calories on Weight Watchers.

I read once that aspartame reduces a neurotransmitter in your brain called taurine. It's poison. I have a diabetic son and I won't let him have anything with this stuff in it. Crystal lite is full of it. Regular sugar is bad but these artificial ones are even worse.

the problem with artificial sweeteners is that people tend to consume more than actual sugar. You can moderate sugar...

Artificial sweeteners DO cause the body to release more insulin but with NO sugar/carbs to use it up, free-flowing insulin can result in weight gain. It actually triggers the brain to say to the body...eat more food.

Nothing actually wrong with sugar....but we all justify to suit our neeRAB.

There is agave syrup, maple syrup, sugar in the raw, honey, etc...at least the body uses it.

I agree that stevia is gross, I can't stand it! I use Agave Nectar or Sugar in the Raw most of the time but I still like to use white sugar cubes sometimes because it reminRAB me of when I was a kid and my grandma made me chammomile or rose hip tea.

I wouldn't use the artificial stuff, it's all chemicals and probably most likely not healthy.

I can agree with this. It probably DOES do damage, but in order to have any effect on you would need to consume a whole lot of it, in my opinion. Maybe there is someone who is sensitive on it, I can't say, but basiclly we can't escape from "dangerous" additives in any way.

I have an article that I clipped out of my local newspaper where someone explained about these sweeteners. It says: This carcinogenic substance enters the brain even more quickly through the consumption of candies, mints and chewing gums. Aspartame breaks down into formaldehyde. It's worse than depleted uranium. It causes cancer, blindness, migraines and grandmal seizures. You make the choice to put it in your body.

I have a suggestion, why not try coffee without sugar? It might sound impossible if you have a sweet tooth but i trained myself into likeing tea and coffee with no sugar! Much better for you.
