Art Portfolio?

I'm applying to art schools, I'm a fairly good artist but I'm uncertain as to what they're looking for. I know they want 2dimentional drawings..but I honestly don't know specifically what. That could be anything! I'm so lost. I think this whole portfolio thing is really intimidating, and it feels like no matter how long I spend on a piece it's still not good enough.

Any suggestions? insight? Inspiration?
 
Contact them and get a list, all schools do have required pieces. Sometimes a specific fruit or vegetable cut in half as a pencil or charchoal. Not sure why, they seem to love cabbage.
 
Oh man when I applied to Design school my portfolio was ...petty bad. compared to what i do now. Dont stress too much. Show versatility, differing mediums- subjects- styles...Make sure you take great pictures of each piece too. Use neutral backgrounds and good lighting (no shadows). See what schools want as far as submittals- some want slides and some are cool with a disk of images (be sure to include your name, title of work, medium, date of completion and dimensions)- keep unit of measurements consistant. If you put it on a disk keep it really clean looking- dont have fancy transitions or anything distracting and tacky like that. keep it clean and professional. The schools will be looking for potential, desire and talent. Show them what you can do- WOW them! Good luck!
 
Pick drawings that show that you are skilled as, in you can draw what you see, a still life. Then include drawings that should your interpretations and creativity.

Send them YOUR best stuff.
What you might do is try to get an
idea of what work their instructors
and students are doing.

Check out the faculty, do some web searching,
their website probably has pictures of student work.

Keep in mind, you're going to school to learn,
they know that too. They want to see a body of work
that shows YOUR interest in image making.

The early work I included in my first portfolio was way
different from the portfolio I had when I left college
