Art History - Medieval Illumination?

I'm trying to write an essay to the prompt:

"Assessment: students will write a three paragraph paper to show the connection of the fundamental beliefs of Christianity with the art forms of illuminated manuscripts, friezes and Christian cathedrals in Europe. Include specific details, examples and evidence from your research to support your ideas."

My art history teacher is a complete idiot, and gave me links to sites that I'm supposed to base my essay off of. But the links are pointless and tell me nothing about the subject. Cathedrals and friezes are easy, but does anybody know the connection between religion and illumination? I know it's common in old bibles and church materials like choral pieces, but I'm not sure what else I can say other than "they used it," since many other things from that period used it as well. I'm not coming up with any good search results either. I'm hoping that somebody who knows a bit about medieval art can give me some valid information.

If anyone is wondering, my teacher doesn't teach. She gives essay prompts and maybe the occasional internet link. But no actual material. I feel like half the time I'm basing my internet essays after internet hearsay, especially since I've noticed that many of her links are highly inaccurate.
