Here's an idea for a list thread that I thought would be interesting: have a go at naming ten cartoons (they can be feature films, short films, TV series, even commercials if you like) that you feel represent the world of animation.
I'm not talking about a "ten best" list - for example, you could do ten milestones in the history of animation, or ten cartoons that represent the variety of animation being made today, or maybe ten cartoons you'd show to someone who was new to the animation scene. The choice is yours!
Here's my list - I decided to take five big names in the history of animation and put them next to five lesser-known cartoons that set them off.
1 - Steamboat Willie
2 - The Adventures of Prince Achmed (The end of silent animation next to one of the best cartoons of the silent era)
3 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
4 - Grave of the Fireflies (the quintessential animated feature and a film with a similar aesthetic but very different content)
5 - The Pink Panther
6 - Composition in Blue (two attempts to break away from the established Disney aesthetic, with quite different results)
7 - The Simpsons
8 - Lip Synch (two adult cartoon series from the 80s, one drawing heavily on live action shows, the other making a point out of being animated)
9 - Toy Story
10 - Homestar Runner (the effects of computers on animation: one a massive blockbuster from a big studio, the other the creation of two guys with a copy of Flash)
