Aren't religions just failed sciences?

They spawned from times when we didn't understand anything, and religion was an attempt to explain the things around us that we did not understand at the time.
@ioerr: Yes, science by todays standards limits itself to empirical evidence (which is a good thing), but that is why I said "failed" science. The same rules wouldn't necessarily have had to of applied at those times. Like trying to explain lightning, and saying it was a God because that was their explanation for the phenomena of their environment.
