Are you knowledgeable with dirt bikes?

I am interested in buying a used dirt bike for my son. He is eleven years old, five foot six, and one hundred pounds. Although I am skeptical about buying him a 125cc, I feel it would be prudent to buy him a bike he can enjoy years from now also. I found a 1984 CR125 in great condition. Is this bike too big or powerful for the boy. Also, is there any disadvantage to buying an older bike? I don't know jack about dirt bikes, but they appear similar in size and shape for the past 25 years. What would be the disadvantage to buying an antique bike? (Besides power) What is the benefit of a newer model?
 
You can expect a used 125 in particular to be well-thrashed by the time it goes on the block. A 200cc four stroke is much likely to still be worth riding a few years down the road.
