Say you want to keep your cellphone attached to your belt. Are you allowed to keep it with you as you are screened at the airport checkpoint? When going through the metal detector, can you place your valuables (cellphone, watch, any jewelry youre wearing) on a container in your view, and then get the items back once you pass the metal detector? Can cellphones be stolen while you are being screened?
Is it better to carry my cellphone and ipod with me through the checkpoint instead on putting it in my carry-on which will go through the xray thing?

You put all contents in a plastic bin, it goes through the xray, you are right next to the machine, there are guards everywhere, you pick up your belongings and go. If someone picked up your phone and pocketed it, there is still so much secuirty around your in a secured area you or the guard next to you could reach out your hand and grabe their shirt, so dont worry its all safe and stays next to you at all times, in the US anyhow, at the many airports Ive been to anyhow. I dont fear losing anything.

every thing will stay in your view. you grab a container, put all metals in it, put it through the machine, walk through at the same time. pick your stuff up when it comes out.
there would be no chance of anyone stealing anything because you are with it the whole time. plus there are tons of security guards everywhere at checkpoints! hope it helps
