are we allowed to discuss religion in college assigments, SC?

I am a college student in sc. The teacher had us read a short selection on buddhism. We were to write a post (online course) stating what the 4 noble truths are, and then if we agree with them. It turned into a debate.
Are teachers supposed to include religion in schools in this manner?

The great thing about college is that you are going to be exposed to many different religions, philosophies, and types of people. It's not like a public high school, where the professor can't even mention religion. Although your professor should do their best not to espouse one religion over the other, it is acceptable to have this type of debate. I tend to think it's a pointless one, because everyone is going to present their own views of religion and not necessarily consider other's point of view. But perhaps their intention was simply to introduce you to the many opinions of your fellow classmates.
