Are used Toyota 4-runners reliable vehicles? If so, which year and model should I buy?

The vehicule is one thing, the local dealer is another important one : Get feedback about the repair place close to you. I have an amazing Totota place here in Indianapolis, no idea abut LA !
If the repair place sounds good, that by all means yes, consider this purchase.
 
Yes, the Toyota is a great SUV.

They get bigger as they get newer so if size matters (doesn't it always!!) get something newer. I actually prefer the 4Runner when it as still a very good midsize SUV '97 - '02. I really think those had the best footprint, perfect size. As it grew it turned into a moms taxi and then it just got too large in 2003.
