Are toyota avensis gearboxes interchangeable?

I have a 52 plate 2002 1.8vvti Avensis. The gearbox has gone. what gearboxes will fir it? does it have to be out of an exact same model or will gearboxes from different engine sizes etc work?
 
Richard, the best thing to do is get the exact same model gear box as it can be a real pain if you were to get another box and try to fit it only to find out that it does not fit.
I would do a ring around the local scrap yards and see if they have the same model and year as yours.
