Are Todays Films Getting Worse?

In my opinion 80's and 90's movies are way better then todays MONSTER Multi Million Pound BUDGETS.

The only good things about todays films are the special effects, take away the CGI and your left with a average film you'd only watch the once. What they can do with computer graphics today is out of this world, this isn't a thread to slag off modern movies. There have been some pretty good films in the past few years, but again in my opinion there just not the sort of films you can watch over and over if you know what I mean.

The films I can watch over and over again are:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Robocop
Jurassic Park
The Shawshank Redemption
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Alien
Full Metal Jacket
Back to the Future
Die Hard
Ghost
Ghost Busters

And they were all made in the 80's, early 90's. Apart from Monty Python that was late 70's.

I can't think of any film that was made in the last 5 or 6 years that I could watch over and over.

Have Hollywood run out of ideas or are film makers getting lazy.

I've heard that theres yet another Scary Movie being made and nodoubt another American Pie.

Back to The Future according to IMDB had a budget of $19,000,000. Spiderman-2 had a whopping $200,000,000. I've seen Spiderman-2 once and it was OK, but If that was on TV the same time as Back to the future i'd watch BTTF - even tho I have the complete boxset.

I don't think so. The films you've listed aren't really any better than more recent ones, it's just that they have probably have sentimental value with you for nostalgic reasons. That's why you like watching them over and over.

I can see your point about CGI encouraging film makers to get lazy, but at the same time, there are a lot of good movies getting made these days, you just have to watch them with an open mind.

I can watch the following films again and again.

Ronin
Leon: The Professional
The Godfather Trilogy
Dogma
Heat
All 5 Dirty Harry movies

:D

I see your point about CGI possibly making filmmakers lazy, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within despite having big names doing the voices bombed at the box office and I didn't like it because it didn't seem to tie in with the game series. However there was another movie made based on Final Fantasy VII (my favourite computer game of all time) called Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children set after the events of the game. I loved it not just because it was "true" to the game series but also because much like the game itself the story was solid.

I really have to agree, I just don't think films these days have the staying power as those made more than ten years ago. I can watch all those films again and again as well Nick, really love them.

Most of the films I like watching were made way before I was born. It is rare when I film is truly outstanding these days. Even the films which win loaRAB of awarRAB are not that great. For instance, Crash which won best film Oscar last year. I was really looking forward to watching it after hearing what it was about and was left completely empty after watching it. Real disappointment.

I think it is a shame. It just seems that film makers think a big budget and loaRAB of special effects will make up for a poor storyline! I can't remember the last time I was ever scared by a recent horror/thriller film. :(

Spiderman 1 was good and didnt run out of ideas towarRAB the end. But it seems that to get original ideas for films then you have to go for the British Films. (unless you want sequels that are crap or comic book remakes or remakes of old films ie King Kong)

I think it depenRAB on the genre. Animation films are still going very strong (Films like Happy Feet, Finding Nemo) and also action films too - like the Matrix, Spiderman, Superman Returns etc... but I think Horror films have fallen on their ass. The last good horror film I saw was 'Shaun of the Dead' - all the ones I've seen since then rely on over-used clich

Take Dawn Of The Dead.

I've seen the 70's version and the remake.... I liked the 70's version more, the story and the acting made up for the lack of special effects and expensive make up effects.

I got another example: The Wicker Man, completely ruined by Nicholas Cage. A modern classic horror... why try and remake it?

I understand the pros with techology these days but I am pushed to be impressed by any film made after say the 1990s. The number of remakes is ridiculous. Why bother remaking something as brilliant as The Wicker Man? And in the process turn the main villian into a completely unscary old woman! Not a patch on Lee!

I don't think that they nessacerily are .. its just that the films you have seena lot of are the films you like .. hence watching them over and over .. I'm sure a lot of bad films were made around those times 2 .. they just arent remembered the same!! As will the bad movies of today .. they will fade away and we will be left remembering the goodies!

no, in my opinion its the fact that main cinemas are choosing the big budget films instead! They are leaving out the indie scene so they can guarantee income.

I dont believe todays films are getting worse, its just the cinemas decision are.

There are some really good movies out there, particulary in the indie scene, but for sure big budget films are getting worse and worse if it's not a remake it's an adaptation of a Tv series, I don't bother going to the cinema anymore unless it's to watch an old classic.

And I do agree with BlurAlly, who in their right minRAB thought it was a good idea to remake the "Wicker man"? I'm not really into Horror movies but did they really thought that they could make a better "Omen"?

I'm dreading the "Brideshead revisited" movie version....

What about the indie film "Lunatic" Written, directed and produced by Bill Maloney. Comes out on DVD rental on 14 May and for retail on 12 June.

I am also in it, so worth a watch.

You cant beat a British Indie

its not that they are getting worse, its getting harder to make films as its all been done! english films are taking off now as the american films have all gone the same.

the year of the 3's this year!

Some of those films you mentioned had CGI in them, so I can't really see the point. What they can do now with CGI, compared to ten years ago is staggeringly different. Technology moves on and CGI is used where it is needed. For instance The Day After Tomorrow, or Independence Day without CGI just wouldn't work. Granted some films overuse it and turn out rubbish, but if they were made 20 years ago using the technology of the day, then they would still probably be rubbish. Children Of Men, which I would say was an indie film in a way used CGI and it is a great film

Just because a film has CGI in it does not make it more watchable. It makes it bearable to watch, but not any better in my opinion

For it's time, Back To The Future cost a lot to make, it's all relative. Budgets increase and so does studios demanRAB for blockbusters
