Can mollies be kept with neon tetras? I'm asking because I'm planning to combine them if the answer is positive...
I'm asking because people say that mollies need salt in their water where as neons don't.

Mollies cannot live in salt or brackish water, they are a freshwater tropical fish. Neons are good too but are very sensitive to water conditions.

Both are perfectly compatible

Hmm mixed answers ay!

First off store bought Mollies are mostly hybrids and many do best in brackish conditions. Some have been aclimitised to saltwater. Their bodies can handle that. With no salt at all they're prone to electrolyte problems.

Neon's can't handle prolonged exposure to salt, and never more than an SG of 1.002. Most South American fish like these Tetras have low tolerance to prolonged exposure to salt.

Why not go for Platys instead of Mollies? They look similar but stay smaller and are better in salt-free water.

Neon tetras don't NEED salt, but they can live in it . They do not usually have diseases when brought from a good quality fish store. They are a little less hardy than some other fish, but I've never had problems keeping them alive. If they've lived their whole lives in water without salt, you may want to gradually add more and more salt over a few days to help them acclimate, but this probably isn't necessary.
