Are there really 5, 8, or 10 precepts for following Buddhism?

There are actually documented history and current practices of the 5, 8, and 10 path way as prescribed by separate versions of Buddhist practices in the world. Most Buddhist practices also entail that along the path, the precepts are lifted, to the limit of the base 5.

It appears that a precept is a much different thing than say...oh...a commandment.
I'm watching Louie on Hulu right now.

In Buddhism, lay people can take 5, 8, 10, 16 or 64 precepts, depending on the tradition and with authorization of a teacher.

Monks and nuns take over 200 precepts, again the number depending on the tradition.

The precepts orient a lay person's life toward actions that promote happiness and reduce suffering.

Monks and nuns typically follow the precepts much more closely than lay people, as appropriate for someone who has dedicated their life to serving all beings.
