Are there any ways to tell if a guy likes you, on INSTANT MESSENGER chat?

I mainly use facebook chat. So are there any forms of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure (haha, I sound like a dork), etc. that might mean a guy likes you? Or are there any ways to tell if like he's trying to hide that he likes you? Just any ways to decipher a guy's feelings, please tell me! :) Oh and also tone of chatting?
I actually know the guy.
 
he would put a lot of happiness in his messages, like smilie faces like all the time. and if he messes up his spelling it tells you he doesn't care.
