...checked, and they fail? I bought a used car privately, and the seller told me a mechanic told him it was safe to drive...specifically the brakes...and 2 days later I have failed brakes and ABS and nearly 1000 in repairs. We did not have a bill of sale....just a title...I'm in Ohio...can anyone shine some light on this for me?

It is the buyers responsibility to make sure the car is what they want and to have it inspected by a competent shop. Don't take the word of the seller unless he has receipts to back up claims of work done. The car was sold as-is.
