I have read the Twilight series (twice) and am now reading The Host. I hate finishing a book before I have another one ready to go. I feel like Stephanie Meyers has almost spoiled me to other authors. I realize many don't like all of the detail she brings to a novel but for me, that's what makes her one of the best storytellers I've ever read (in any genre.)
Sooo, as for my question. Are you aware of any authors who write with as much detail- enough to REALLY take you into the story AND who's themes are a bit different (aliens/vampires/etc.) but not demonic or containing sex?
Thank you all for these great answers.

"...leaves huge, bloody holes in the plot!... quite good at describing cars and dresses, but detail does not make a good book."

Lola, I don't mind the little holes because THAT'S where my imagination is able to fill in the gaps and I LOVE that. She's good at describing EVERYTHING and that's what I'm looking for.
Jaderak- storytelling is what I LOVE about her. Her writing is good BUT her storytelling is GREAT and for me that's what makes a great read. Good reading choices!
I DO love CS Lewis. And I won't be reading The Golden Compass for my own spiritual reasons. I'll check out the other authors mentioned here, thanks everybody!
