Are the grooves on the bottom of wood snowskate decks really necessary?

I'm making my own homemade snowskate and I think I'm doing a pretty good job. I've been researching though and I've noticed comments on the grooves in the plastic of the bottom of snowskates. Just the flat ones. Not the Bi-deck ones. I think i can make my own grooves in the bottom of mine, I just don't want to go through the trouble unless it's necessary. Let me know what you think.
