Are the best policemen the ones who were in the military?

My theoretical reasoning is that if you have been around radicals that want to kill you and your platoon 24-7 with AK-47s somewhere in the middle east, maybe a drunk guy with a pistol at a gas station wouldn't scare you as much....please give me your insight

Military experience doesn't define a good/bad cop. What does is their ability to make split second decisions and the most crucial moments and their ability to control the environment around them.

The city I live in won't hire former army as cops.

The unofficial reasoning is that they tend to escalate the situation based on their previous training.

Soldiers are trained to defend themselves and their comrades with lethal force if threatened, as a cop that's not a first resort it's a last.

The best cops are the ones that do their job with integrity and honor but sadly their few and far between. Most think anything under a murder is beneath them and go power trip if you call them on anything they do.

The best officers I've seen have common sense and good decision making skills. These are not things you learn, they are traits you must already have. For this reason, military experience has little to do with it.

Especially when you realize the time the spend dealing with armed drunks is minimal compared to all the other services they are providing.
