Are repetitive Nightmares a Mental Illness?

When I was about 10 years old for 6 months or so i had extremely bad nightmares i would wake up crying in a pool of sweat. Once i think I actually woke up screaming. I got nightmares about 4-5 nights a week, and I used to dread bedtime. I remember sitting up all night because I didn't want to face the nightmares again. To make matter worse i used to sleepwalk all the time for about 3 years as well. And i would wake up in random places in my house like the lounge room sofa and once in the kitchen. its so terrifying waking up after sleep walking and having no idea how you got there.
My mother eventually got the nightmares out of me by staying by my side until i fell asleep, and telling me to think of how much fun i am going to have the next day instead of what creature would haunt my dreams, and the nightmares eventually went away.:)
So i was just wondering was this a mental illness that i have overcome? or was this merely just a stage that i grew out of?
Thanks for any support. :)
