Are mood swings common side effects of diabetes medication?

My dad found out about a week ago that he has type 2 diabetes. I just came home from work and was emptying a plastic coffee filter into the garbage and tossed it into the sink, and he told me not to throw things, then threw a glass pepper grinder at my head and it broke and exploded to the floor. I finished with the garbage (with a little more force than was needed), told him I wasn't helping him clean it up and went down to my room. Two minutes later he came downstairs crying/whimpering and apologizing. I've only seen my dad cry once in my twenty years and that was more than ten years ago, when he found out we called my step father "dad". He hugged me tightly for like five minutes while he was crying... it was so weird. Just wondering if this could be an effect of the medication he would be taking... not sure what meds you take for type 2 diabetes, hoping someone here might have experience.
And I have to say, this is VERY uncharacteristic of my dad, when he's pissed he gets quiet and goes off to be alone... He's not physically aggressive at all.
