Are mental illnesses such as dementia or bi-polar hereditary?

See, depression seems to run in the family,(3 different generations have suffered a bit of a breakdown, my older cousin was at one point anorexic) so I was wondering whether anything like bi-polar or dementia runs in the family too? What about OCD?
