are jeep cherokee's for off roading right out of the factory?

i just got one. 1988.
and i wana do some off roading with it but im scared i might mess somethin up. people i see off roading have huge tires,shocks, and lifts.. ?
 
a cherokee is perfectly able to do some light off-roading right out of the box. remember i said LIGHT off-roading.
 
I would go easy with it at first. See if your Cherokee can handle being beat up. You only have to get the huge tires, shocks, and lift if you plan to do some serious off roading.
