Are G.E.D class required to take the G.E.D test?

because I passed all the practice G.E.D test's and they still stuck me in a class but I came down with a major flu and missed more then 3 days so they kicked me out . . . Can I just take the G.E.D test?? or do I have to go through those lame classes that are pointless. Im currently 18 years old.
