are funky trunks worth it?

I'm a competitive swimmer, and i see more and more people in my club and around wearing "funky trunks" (those awesome patterned and stripy and colorful swimming trunks), while I'm still in my good old speedos . I asked a few people who had funky trunks what they were like and received general praise for the appearance, but I'd like a little more.

so, are funky trunks worth getting?
I have a chance to get some tomorrow so answers would be appreciated ASAP :)
