...Home Premium on laptop.? Recently I got my Compaq Laptop's system recovery carried out. After that, within a couple of days I came across some suspicious looking files mentioned above. I tried Avira and Norton Internet Security to scan my computer, but the results were positive, saying there was no virus. However, my computer is slower than before now in booting and running.
I also used an external hard drive to copy some data, and the files "System volume information" and "$Recycle.bin" appeared on it too. The recycle.bin folder when accessed is locked, and empty, but when i delete it, it shows some 3gb in it, and gives some cautions after deleting some files saying it is a system file and deleting it may harm my pc.
Being suspicious, I searched for the file "desktop.ini" and found some 150+ files on my pc. They were made in every folder in every drive. I deleted almost all Desktop.ini files, but some were not deleted due to errors (Access Denied).
On another website, a user with the same problems said that it IS a virus and that it gets copied on every USB or external hard drive he connects with the computer (same as my problem) and says that it corrupts the boot sector, the windows shuts down at its wish, and after formatting it doesnt read bootable CD's and doesnt install a new Windows. This has got me worried.
Is it really a virus? I disabled the viewing of system files in folder options, and the suspicious files have hid, but if its a virus, its hiding or unhiding wouldnt make a difference.
Please help, and explain me why the Recycle.bin file on my external hard drive was of 3gb, any possible reasons?
