Are exercise cycles/pedals you can use while sitting on the computer, reading, etc, really that effective?

I exercise for 60 minutes on my inclined treadmill 6 days per week, but I hate how stationary I am for the rest of the day. I was wondering if an exercise cycle might do me any good. However, reviews are mixed, and some people claim it will barely burn any calories at all. Advice?
