are emails appropriate when discussing infidelity issues?

i think some discussions need to take place on the phone but sometimes thats not possible (i.e. long distance or out to sea) i just wanted to know if it would be a good idea to ask if your gf or bf is cheating/accuse them in an email. i think somethings need a verbal reaction...advice?
