President Barack Obama's old Senate seat is in increasing danger of being taken by a Republican after it was reported that the family bank of the Democratic candidate had lent $20 million (£13 million) to Chicago criminals.
Broadway Bank, owned by the Giannoulias family, had allegedly lent $20 million to convicted felons Michael "Jaws" Giorango and Demitri Stavropoulos. The bank is believed to be close to collapse.
Giorango was convicted of promoting a nationwide prostitution ring and Stavropoulos of running a multistate gambling ring. An investigation by the newspaper found that $20 million was lent to Giorango when Mr Giannoulias was a senior loan officer with the bank.
