Just about every business will bill a check-bouncer a returned-check fee of about $25 to $40. Presumably this means they are legally entitled to put this charge on a bill, or they wouldn't all have gotten away with it for so long.
The question is, what about individuals? Are individuals due that same customary compensation from someone who writes them a check that comes back NSF?
And if so, what would be the proper way to go about collecting it from
a) another individual
b) a company
And if not, why not?
If it varies by state, answer for most states in the USA.
