Are british roads more dangerous now more bikes are on them?

Being that people are encouraged to cycle more now because of environmental matters etc..
 
They are dangerous because most road users think they own the road. If i wanted to talk a walk down my local high street i would be well within my rights to do so but i would probably get mowed down by some selfish motorist. Saying that cyclists don't need a license to ride on the road which should be changed
