Are Alligator Gar fish a pre-species to alligators or are they on a different

evolutionary branch? They seem to carry such a similar look - where does the evolutionary tree branch? Which came first in the fossil record (if gars can even be found in the fossil record)?
Re: Two different families. - But fish came before Alligators, correct? And everything grew from a primary branch? Where was the branch?
 
Different branch. Alligator Gar is a fish and an Alligator is a reptile, two completely different and distinct families.
