The GTs, IDK but I bet they made autos. Ford probes did come with automatics but I'm not positive about the Probe GT package.

I'd say the Probe is not a great first car. It isn't even a great car. In fact, it really is stretching things a bit to call it a decent car. Reliability and repair issues were a problem on these things from the beginning. Everyone I've ever known who had one was glad to get rid of it. That said, when they run they are fun.

So it may depend on you definition of a "great first car." If you mean a car that can be had dirt cheap, that you won't cry when you wreck it, and that you can learn how to do your own service and work on out of necessity.... then I'd say the Probe could be an awesome first Car!!

If you mean something safe and reliable and inexpensive - get a Toyota Corolla or a Tercel or a Toyota 2wd truck. 22RE rocks for reliability and ease of repair.

They came in a 4 speed automatic and 5 speed manual, so no they aren't all stick shift. They aren't bad for a first car they come in 4 cylinders or a v6 model so they have ok gas mileage and they aren't too powerful (0-60 in 9.2 or 7.5 seconds) with a top speed of either 113 miles an hour or 133. This all depends on what year it is you can look it up on wikipedia for more detailed information. But it doesn't have too many airbags or anything in it either though so thats something to think about. It would be a good car to beat up I think and it will get you where you need to go you just need to be careful as always when driving.
