i need to replace the rims on my bike and the my tire says "place only on hooked rims". What does that mean? are most rims hooked rims? or do i have to buy a special kind of rim

This has nothing to do with tubeless vs tubed and, contrary to what the other posters are suggesting, regular tubes and tires CAN be run in UST rims. I guess that's why you never trust a Performance sales associate...
In any case, as for your question... You're fine on any new rims you can buy at a bike shop. "hooked" rims refers to older rims, some of which were straight-sided (vs. hook-sided) and would therefore not hold a tire as securely as a hook-edge rim. You would actually have a pretty tough time tracking down a straight-sided rim today, they're pretty much a dead standard.

Most rims are hooked rims where you have an inner tube and a tire that catches a "hook" (a small lip on the inside of the rim). These are often called clincher rims.
Rims you are not looking for: Mountain bikes have UST rims and tires that are tubeless while road bikes have tubular rims that use a glue to affix a tire to the rim.

this type of rim as you call hooked rim are for clincher type tires that have a wire bead around the tire. that is all that means.
